McDonald's Halloween Mansion
Gulf Coast Fishers of Men was excited to volunteer their time at McDonald’s Halloween Mansion at the Children’s Museum of Houston this past year. There were spooktacular, hands-on activities to do, such as experimenting with gooshy, green slime and having a hair-raising good time with static electricity! Kids also learned the science of forensics by learning how to fingerprint and how their math skills compared to those of a bat as they explored creatures of the night!
An educational Halloween is a great one but what would it be without costumes and trick-or-treating!? There were trick-or-treating stations set all around the museum for the kids to enjoy a safe and fun experience. The boo-tiful and freaky children’s costumes ranged from educational characters like Dora the Explorer to grizzly bears, vampires, princesses and Superheroes! After dancing the monster mash, D.J. Beetlejuice gave away prizes to the best costume in three different age groups. Ronald McDonald, Hamburglar and even clumsy Grimace were all there to make the event complete.
Gulf Coast Fishers of Men is excited and is looking forward to getting more involved in helping. If you would like GCFOM to come help at your event, or for more information, feel free to contact us at gcfom@hotmail.com.
Fair On The Square
Gulf Coast Fishers of Men volunteered their time at Rusty Hook Fishing Club’s 9th annual Fair on the Square Kids Fishing Tournament in October of 2006. The tourney got underway at 9:00 a.m. with registration and ended at 1:00 p.m. with many door prizes given out, and then Club President, John Edel handed out rod and reel combos and certificates for the heaviest Redfish, Speckled Trout, Sand Trout, Croaker, Flounder, Catfish, Perch, and Black Drum categories. There were over 60 kids who braved stormy weather to fish in the tournament and weighed in over 75 fish. Each child got a t-shirt, tackle box, fishing line, stringers, weights, floats, and even bait shrimp. Gulf Coast Fishers of Men was there to help in many ways from distributing tackle boxes and bait to weighing the caught fish and helping anglers safely remove their catch.
Sponsors included The City of La Marque, Fair on the Square, La Marque Lions Club, Texas City Mainland Lions Club, La Marque Parks and Recreation, Boyd’s One Stop Bait Camp, Eagle Point Marina, Bay Products, Cherokee Bait, and The Advertiser Newspapers.
As we begin making a difference in the lives of children, Gulf Coast Fishers of Men is excited and looking forward to getting more involved in our communities. If you would like GCFOM to come help at your event, or for more information, feel free to contact us at gcfom@hotmail.com
Brighten The Blight
This year’s Brighten the Blight was a great success and a wonderful way to get directly involved with our community. On March 10th, a group of GCFOM volunteers traveled down to South Houston to help SUCDC clean up and fix two homes and several vacant lots in the 3600 block of Noah. These selected homes and properties were selected based upon their needs, home ownership, and senior citizen status.
Most of the work consisted of painting the exterior of the homes, removal of trash, manicuring of the lawns and the installation of the “Brightening the Blight – One Block at a Time” signs around the neighborhood.
This project was a lot of fun and a major success. The make-over of this one block in the community has stimulated care, empowerment and community involvement that has become the catalyst of recent changes throughout the community.
Several other groups involved included Uniting Worlds Foundation, Inc., Covenant Neighborhoods, Inc., South Union Church of Christ, Loren Jackson (MAPA Law Firm), The Houston Umbrella, Keep Houston Beautiful, State Republican Boris Miles, “I Have a Dream” – Houston, Shell Chemical LP, The Free-at-Last Club, Sterling Bank, Constable May Walker, and many others.
As Gulf Coast Fishers of Men continues to make a difference in our city, we are excited about working with our neighborhoods and developing relationships with our and is looking forward to getting more involved in helping. If you would like GCFOM to come help at your event, or for more information, feel free to contact us at gcfom@hotmail.com.
